Yes, the designers at Wartburg and Trabant were well aware that their cars were decades behind the times and so designed new ones. Each time higher authority said “nein, danke” because they could sell every one they made and were allowed no money for new models anyway.

I feel like it has a lot of design similarities with the 1987+ Renault 9 and the MKIII Jetta. Not only could the designers style a good looking car they were almost a decade ahead.
